Sergeant Major Aan ALGRA, born 24 Sep 1908 Wirdum, Friesland, The Netherlands, died July 1945 Ambarawa POW camp, Central Java, Dutch East Indies (now known as Indonesia). He was the son of Symen Hendriks ALGRA and Aagje Ykes YKEMA. Aan volunteered for the Dutch military the Koninklijk Nederlandsch Indische Leger (KNIL) when he was approximately 17 years of age and was shipped to Indonesia about 1927. There he met his future wife Anna LASUT they married about 1928 Java, born 5 May 1909 Manado, North Sulawesi, Dutch East Indies, she died of tuberculosis 27 Sep 1938 Soerabaja, East Java, Dutch East Indies. They had 3 children, 2 girls and one boy: Aagje, Eelkje and Henkie. Aagje was born 16 Feb 1929 Tjimahi, West Java, Dutch East Indies, she married Johan Frederik VAN OLDEN 19 Jul 1950 Soerabaja, East Java, Indonesia. Eelkje, she was born about 1931 Batavia, West Java, Dutch East Indies, died about 1933 same place as born, and Henkie, he was born about 1933 Batavia, West Java, Dutch East Indies died about 1933 same place as born. Aan was active in the Dutch resistance/underground against the Japanese army. In the summer of 1945 he was captured by the Japanese Kempeitai (Secret Police) and was interrogated and tortured in one of the POW camps at Ambarawa. Aan died soon thereafter due to his treastment by the Kempeitai and starvation, he was buried in a mass grave sometime in July 1945 possibly at Fort Willem 3 penitentiary in Ambarawa.
