William Joseph Curtis was born on the 3rd of November 1924 in Wednesbury. His parents were James Arthur Curtis (born 1900) and Mary Ann Curtis née Tonks (born 1900). He was baptized on November 23rd, 1924. William went to St Mary’s School in Wednesbury and was later employed by J. Frankel Aluminium Ltd. In Wednesbury.
He joined the General Servic Corps (GSC) on March 4, 1943. After his service with the GSC, William was transferred to the South Staffordshire Regiment on April 14, 1943. The division of which the South Staffordshire Regiment was a part, landed in Normandy after D-Day in June 1944 and afterwards fought in battles in and around Caen.
Following the landing, William Curtis is assigned to the 1/7th Battalion of the Queens’s Royal Regiment (West-Surrey), that forms part of a larger army unit, the 7th Armoured Division, known as the Desert Rats.
Udenhout was liberated bij the 7th Armoured Division on October 26, 1944. It is unknown where and in which circumstances William Curtis was killed. On the wounded and died lists of the Expeditionary Forces (the British Army in Western Europe during World War II) the entry for Willam Curtis is: “wounded 28.10.44, died 28.10.44”.Information:
