Erna and her brother Walter came tot he Netherlands with a Kindertransport on March 30th, 1939. After staying at the quarantine station in Rotterdam Erna lived at the "Achterklooster" facility in Rotterdam until April 1940. Then she moved to Amsterdam. After a short stay in different homes she moved in with a foster family, first in the Michelangelostraat, later, since April 1941 in the Rubensstraat, number 80. When the Gestapo came to pick her up during the raid of August 9th, 1942, Erna was happy to come along because she was convinced she would see her parents again. The next day Erna was deported to Auschwitz. Erna's parents had to go to Terezin in August 1943. They summoned Walter back: he had been living with a foster family in The Hague. The were reunited in Terezin, from where they were taken to Auschwitz in October 1944. Last address in Germany: Berlin, Niebuhrstr. 77.
