My grandfather worked as a assistant chemist on the Gesiekan 'suiker plantage' (not that far from Djogjakarta/Java). He became a prisoner of war in March 1942 and was transported to Rangoon to work as a labourer on the Burma/Thailand railway. He died in POW transition camp close to Rangoon from dysentery before he arrived at the labour camp.
His wife Adriana Mathilda Jonker (1897-1975) and his daughter Catherine Maria Kaufman (died in the 1979's) were interned in a civilian camp on Java and were repatriated after the war to Holland.
His son Hermanes Andries Kaufman (1923-1996), my father, escaped in 1942 and joined the RAF Squadron 320.
